Starting point
1348 Ottignies-Louvain-la-Neuve

The Musem in the University opened in 1979, eight years after the foundation of Louvain-la-Neuve. Over the decades numerous gifts have enriched the original university collections and this has resulted in a considerable Art and Civilisation heritage which is shown in displays which change regularly. This heritage is centered on the main trends of European and Belgian Art : from an Albert Durer or Rembrandt print to a canvas by Alechinsky or Delvaux, including Gothic and Baroque sculptures. But these collections also allow detours into other Continents with a rich collection of "Arts Premiers" (Africa, Oceanic) and an opening into "Popular" or "Naive"Art. By means of the exhibitions and the changing presentations the visitor will find a Museum which is changing all the time.

Louvain-la-Neuve lake has seen some changes since it was created in 1984. Originally created as a stormwater basin and for fishing, this lake is located in Walloon Brabant’s newest town and is very popular with all. A little haven of greenery in the heart of an urban area, this is a great place to recharge your batteries. You can admire the delightful plants along the banks of the lake as you take your walk or run. Picnics, disc golf, playing on the grass or sitting with a book, there are many ways to enjoy yourself here!

Did you know that the geographical centre of Belgium is in Walloon Brabant, and more specifically in Walhain? In the locality of Tiège, in the valley of the Nil river, a metallic structure has been erected at this precise point. It was built by an architect from the municipality and includes various symbols that are unique to Belgium:- the base represents the Earth’s crust,- the triangle is a simplified diagram of Belgium,- the three pylons symbolise the three regions. Before the Treaty of Versailles in 1919, the centre of Belgium was in Ittre as the three cantons in the east were not yet part of the kingdom.

The best preserved mill in Walloon Brabant rises proudly on this windswept plateau with its rotating cap and its sails. Built in 1834 by the Thienpont family, it was to remain in operation until 1946 and was listed as a historical monument the same year. All the elements of the machinery have been preserved and since restored. Private. Listed.

The 1st French Army Museum at Cortil Noirmont is set in the classrooms of the former school where, in May 1940, a Moroccan regiment decided to base its headquarters due to the combat that was breaking out in the region. The teachers were asked to evacuate...The museum looks back at the operations carried out in 1940 by the French army in Belgium through numerous military artefacts. On display are weapons, ammunition, uniforms, documents from the time, maps, etc. You can learn about operations undertaken by the Belgian, French and British armies as part of the “Dyle manoeuvre”. The French army fought heroically there. It is also possible to combine visiting the museum with visiting the necropolis and battlefield.

The Solvay Regional Estate in La Hulpe is affectionately called the "Park of a thousand rhododendrons", and is one of the loveliest places for a stroll in the country.Lawns, woods, rhododendron beds, and remarkable varieties of trees enhance some 227 ha. This magnificent wooded park just outside Brussels boasts paths around and over tree-lined hills and ponds with exceptionally rich animal life.It is also home to Béthune castle, built in 1842 using the Loire castles as a model, and its French gardens with decorative sculptures.
