Description

The Church of Sainte-Marguerite in Thines, situated in the heart of the village of Thines (Nivelles), is one of the most remarkable religious buildings in Walloon Brabant. Of Romanesque origin, it was built in stages between the early 13th century and the late 18th century, which explains the coexistence of several architectural styles: Romanesque, Gothic, Baroque and Classical.

Some historical landmarks

  • The oldest part of the church dates back to around 1200.
  • The village of Thines became a parish in 1231, and an independent parish from 1590 onwards.
  • The building was extended on several occasions: Gothic bays were added in the 16th century, a Baroque portal in 1635 and a Classical brick chancel around 1774.

Architectural features

  • A Romanesque west façade in sandstone rubble, surmounted by a small slate-roofed bell tower.
  • A harmonious blend of stone and brickwork, reflecting the various phases of construction.
  • Inside, notable features include Baroque elements, an 18th-century high altar and several ancient tombstones.

A remarkable heritage site

  • The church is surrounded by an old cemetery and the parish vicarage.
  • The complex comprising the church, the cemetery, the vicarage and their surroundings has been listed as part of Walloon heritage since 1982.
